The Quran provides a strikingly detailed account of human embryonic development. These descriptions, given over 1400 years ago, offer a step-by-step detail of the early stages of human life, aligning closely with contemporary scientific understanding. Quranic Stages of Embryonic Development
The Quran discusses the stages of human creation in several verses, with Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:12-14) being particularly detailed:
1- Creation from Clay: The process begins with the creation of man from a quintessence of clay. This metaphorical statement sets the stage for the miraculous creation of life.
2- Drop of Fluid (Nutfah): The journey of life begins with a 'nutfah,' a minute quantity of liquid. In scientific terms, this refers to sperm or ovum, highlighting the fertilization process.
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن سُلَـٰلَةٍ مِّن طِينٍAnd indeed, We created humankind from an extract of clay,

3- Alaqah (Clinging Clot): The term 'alaqah' describes the next stage, where the embryo resembles a leech. It clings to the uterine wall and resembles a blood clot, which reflects its appearance and function of absorbing nourishment from the mother's blood.
ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ نُطْفَةً فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍthen placed each ˹human˺ as a sperm-drop in a secure place,

4- Mudghah (Chewed Lump): Following the 'alaqah,' the embryo then becomes 'mudghah,' likened to a chewed lump. This stage corresponds to the formation of somites on the embryo, which appear like the marks of teeth on a chewed substance, indicating the beginnings of the spine.
ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا ٱلنُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةًthen We developed the drop into a clinging clot,

5- Formation of Bones: The next phase involves the creation of bones within the 'mudghah.' These skeletal structures begin to form and are initially cartilaginous before calcifying into bone.
فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةًthen developed the clot into a lump ˹of flesh˺,

6- Clothing Bones with Flesh: After the skeleton develops, it is then covered with flesh or muscle. This stage marks the muscle development phase where the body of the embryo starts gaining form, further defining the human shape.
فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْمُضْغَةَ عِظَـٰمًاthen developed the lump into bones,

7- Development into Another Creation: The final stage mentioned brings the development process to a conclusion, where the embryo transforms into a new creation, ready to be born as a human baby.
فَكَسَوْنَا ٱلْعِظَـٰمَ لَحْمًاthen clothed the bones with flesh,

ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُ خَلْقًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقِينَthen We brought it into being as a new creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of Creators.

- Drop of Fluid (Nutfah): Science recognizes this as the sperm and ovum, which fuse to form a zygote.
- Alaqah: At about 7-12 days after conception, the embryo implants itself in the uterine wall, where it resembles a leech, both structurally and functionally.
- Mudghah: Between the 3rd and 5th weeks, the embryo's somites are visible, resembling the indentations in a chewed substance, which will develop into the vertebral column and skeletal muscles.
- Formation of Bones and Clothing with Flesh: Between the 6th and 8th weeks, the bone tissue starts to form and is subsequently covered with muscles by about the 8th week, which reflects the Quranic description of bones being clothed with flesh.
